MALE SURGERY

INTRODUCTION

Aesthetic surgery in men is gradually increasing. The areas more frequently demanded are those related to facial rejuvenation: eyelids, lifting. Nevertheless we are attending a greater demand for the improvement of the body features: improvement of the abdomen and lately the redefinition of the pectoral area.

ABDOMEN

In men the fat is tipically concentrated at the level of the abdominal flanks, the so-called " love handles ". Stomach is another area of fat deposit. Liposuction is a good procedure to eliminate the excess of fat of these zones, with very satisfactory results. If there is an excess of skin and fat, a dermolipectomy (abdominoplasty) is needed, excising all the leftover zone. The scar is placed on the lower aspect of the abdomen.

Intra-abdominal fat can not be managed by any of these procedures. Diet, xercise and lyfe-style changes are the basis of treatment to remove this fat.

PECTORAL ENHANCEMENT

There are several types of patients who look for this surgery:

-         Body-builders that do not obtain the optimal shape for their pectoral area despite proper training

-         Men who are not body-builders and do not have the time to do it, but wish to enhance the chest.

-         Men with pectoral muscle absence (Poland`s syndrome)

-         After injuries of the pectoral muscle.

The operation consists of placing an implant of silicone. They are not the used in female breast augmentation, but specially shaped for men. They are placed through an axillary incision. The anesthesia is general. A pocket between the greater and lesser pectoral muscles is performed, without detaching their insertions. There is pain in the 4-5 following days. Later on it may have some tenderness, discomfort or itching.

The potential complications are hematoma, infection, temporary disturbances of sensation, or displacement of the implants, giving a feminine look.
