RHINOPLASTY

The surgery of the nose (rhinoplasty) is a usual operation performed by plastic surgeons. This procedure might involve changes in the aspect of the nose, its structure and function. Rhinoplasty can either reduce or augmentate the size of the nose, change the shape of the point, narrow the nostrils or transform the angle between the nose and the upper lip. This operation can help to correct defects from birth, nasal injuries and some respiratory problems. There is not a universal type of rhinoplasty that covers the needs of every patient. However, this surgical procedure is designed for each patient, taking into account his/her needs. The incisions can be done within the nose or disguised in non visible areas of the nose (in case of an open rhinoplasty). Along with rhinoplasty, we can perform internal nasal surgery if we need to improve the own patient respiration system. The best candidate for this kind of surgery is the one who is actually seeking an improvement on the aspect of the nose, not its utter perfection. On top of that, to have down-to-earth expectations, good health and psychological estability are important characteristics in those patients interested in a rhinoplasty.

TECHNIQUE

Apart from enhancing the shape of the nose, it is also aimed at improving its respiratory functions. On the other hand, the final result should not reveal that an operation has been undertaken. The surgery is carried out through small cuts inside the nose. By means of this we are able to:

- Narrow the point by removing part of the nostrils.

- Reduce the curb or arch of the nasal bridge, straightening it up.

- Narrow the nose.

- Make the nose point more snub.

- Place grafts of cartilague in order to fill or improve some areas of the nose.

- Correct nasal deviations.

Only in the case of complex nose shapes or already operated noses, open rhynoplasty is performed. Open rhynoplasty consists of a small incision in the columella (that area of skin between the lip and the nose point that divides both nostrils). After the operation, a protecting plaster cast and two nose-plugs are placed on the operated zone. It is not a painful surgery. The nose-plugs are removed the following day, and the plaster cast a week thereafter.

There is usually an inflammation that lasts one month approximately.
